銀座和光アーツアンドカルチャーにて suzusan colors in mind 展

銀座和光の地階アーツアンドカルチャーで、「suzusan collection – Colors in mind」が開催中。初日のレセプションに伺いました。

村瀬弘行氏が有松絞の背景や制作の過程を詳細に解説。以下、ごく一部ではありますが、お話のダイジェストです。

有松絞は、世界の絞り文化の中でも少し特別な存在です。というのも、多くの地域では「自分たちの暮らしのため」に染めが始まりますが、有松は違うのです。1608 年、街道沿いの小さな村として誕生した有松では、旅人に売るための「商品」として絞りが発達しました。東海道を行き交う人々の目を引くため、模様はどんどん複雑になり、江戸幕府はついに「絞りは有松以外で作ってはならぬ」と専売制を敷きました。結果、わずか 800 メートルほどの町に、200 種類以上もの技法が生まれます。この密度の高さは、世界でも類例がありません。

今回の展示では、そんな「有松ならではの進化」と、村瀬氏の「頭の中の色(colors in mind)」がわかりやすく表現されています。

ラフ・シモンズ時代のディオールも有松絞を採用しています。2014 年のオートクチュールでは、suzusan の立体的な布づくりが採用され、わずか 4 週間で依頼内容を仕上げたそうです。機械では再現できない「偶然性と規則性の共存」が生む美しさは、私も「ディオール展」で実物を見て感動した記憶があります。

会場には、こうした工程をそのまま見せる展示や、数字を自分で刷り込むワークショップもあり、有松絞の魅力を体験しながら理解できます。

Hiroyuki Murase offered a fascinating walkthrough of the history and processes behind Arimatsu Shibori. Below is a brief digest of his talk.

Arimatsu Shibori occupies a unique place among global resist-dyeing traditions. While most dyeing cultures began as “craft for daily life,” Arimatsu evolved differently. Founded in 1608 as a small post town on the Tokaido road, it developed Shibori as a product for travelers. Designs grew increasingly intricate to attract passers-by, and the Edo Shogunate eventually established an exclusive production right: Shibori could only be made in Arimatsu.
The result was extraordinary—over 200 techniques emerging within an 800-meter stretch of town. This density is unparalleled anywhere in the world.

The current exhibition beautifully conveys both this “Arimatsu-specific evolution” and Murase’s own creative sensibility—his “colors in mind.”

Arimatsu Shibori has also caught the eye of global maisons. During Raf Simons’ tenure at Dior, suzusan’s sculptural textiles were used for the 2014 haute couture collection, completed in just four weeks. The blend of chance and precision—something no machine can replicate—is what I remember being deeply moved by when I saw the pieces at the Dior exhibition.

The show includes displays of the actual Shibori processes and a hands-on workshop where visitors can stencil their own numbers. It is a rare opportunity to see and feel the intelligence of Arimatsu Shibori up close.
