ジョルジオ・アルマーニ　ご冥福をお祈り申し上げます

2019年5月に来日したアルマーニ（当時84）のお話を聞く機会がありました。60分の間、アルマーニは美しい姿勢を保って立ったまま、丁寧に話し続けました。若いスタッフが疲れて座り始めても。驚異の体力というよりも、並外れた美意識の高さ、意志の強さ、そして記者たちへの敬意が伝わってきました。

アルマーニが作り出したのは、時代が求めた男性・女性、それぞれの理想像でした。1980年代の男性に官能性を、女性に威厳を。結果として社会変化を後押ししました。さらに50年という長きにわたり、コングロマリットの傘下に納まることなく独立ブランドとして文化的にも影響力を発揮し続けました。

そんな功績はもちろん偉大なものですが、何よりも多くの人を魅了したのは彼の「あり方」だったと思います。ストイックに、エレガントに、仕事や人に向き合う姿勢。アルマーニのあり方そのものが、人間が意志と努力によって到達しうる、一つの理想像でした。感謝をこめて、ご冥福を祈ります。

In May 2019, when he was 84, I had the chance to hear Giorgio Armani speak during a visit to Japan. For a full hour he remained standing with impeccable posture, speaking with care and composure—even as younger staff, tired, began to sit down. What struck me was not so much superhuman stamina as an exceptional aesthetic discipline, a steely will, and a palpable respect for the journalists before him.

Armani created the ideal figures the times demanded—of both men and women. In the 1980s he gave men sensuality and women gravitas, helping to propel social change. For fifty years he maintained cultural influence as an independent house, never subsumed under a conglomerate.

Those achievements are immense. Yet above all, it was his way of being that captivated so many: a stoic, elegant stance toward work and toward people. Armani himself embodied one vision of what human resolve and effort can attain. With gratitude, may he rest in peace.
