A visit to the State Guest House, Akasaka Palace, during its public opening. Photography was not permitted inside, but the splendour rivalled—and perhaps even surpassed—that of Europe’s grand palaces. This is Japan’s only neo-Baroque palace. Meiji-era Japan mastered the architectural language of nineteenth-century French palaces, down to the hierarchy of spaces according to function and ceremonial importance. Into that language, it translated elements of Japanese culture—armour, sacred birds, cherry blossoms, Noh theatre, cloisonné and textiles—and embedded them throughout the palace. The scale is breathtaking. Equally extraordinary is the precision of every detail, across the architecture, gardens and interiors. A National Treasure. And still an active instrument of diplomacy.
