Volume II of Meiji Jingū Taizen, “The Sacred Grove and Civilization,” has been published by Yoshikawa Kōbunkan. I contributed “Wedding Fashion: Dress at Meiji Kinenkan,” tracing the changing styles worn by the countless couples who have celebrated their marriages there. Their clothes offer a glimpse into each era’s aesthetic ideals and the hopes people bring to this milestone.
Compiled by Meiji Jingū to mark its centenary, this five-volume series documents a hundred years of the shrine’s history. Published annually over five years, it brings together a hundred essays across two volumes, alongside a detailed history, a chronology and source materials—including previously unpublished photographs—and a biographical and institutional dictionary.
This second volume contains fifty essays spanning the ecology of the sacred grove in Yoyogi, sport at the Outer Gardens, architecture, treasures, Noh theatre and intellectual history. Together, they offer a rich perspective on modern Japan through Meiji Jingū.
I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute a chapter on dress to a work that may still find readers a century from now.
