きものや伝統織物を本気で守ろうとするならば

きもの、伝統織物の取材をするたびに 「ぜひ、書いてください」と言われることがある。

謎ルールにとらわれず、自由に着てほしい！と。

季節による着分け、場面による細かいルール、主に明治以降に生まれたそんな「ルール」なるものにとらわれず、 どんどん自由に着てほしい。

それがきものを本当に守ることにつながる。

職人の生活を支えることになる。

そもそも人が委縮して着なくなると きものそのものが絶滅するのである 。そこまで危機的状況に来ている。

きものを愛するならば、 きものに長く生き残ってほしいと望むならば、 自由に、できるだけ多くの機会に、楽しんで着てほしい。

本当に好きならアートとしてただ飾ってくれてもいい。

読者にそのように伝えてください、と託されます。

伝統を守り、未来につなぐということは 謎ルールを守れと強いることではない。

きものを作っている職人さんたちがちゃんと生活できて 安心してきものを作り続けられるようにすること。

今はまず、全員でそこを大きな目的とすべきではないでしょうかしらね 。

欲をいえば、リサイクルや古着で楽しんでいる方も、たまには新品を買うことで職人を支援してほしい。

細かい「ルール」なるものの話は、その後でいい。

Whenever I interview people in the world of kimono and traditional textiles, I’m often asked, “Please write about this.”

What they mean is: We want people to wear kimono freely, without being bound by mysterious, rigid rules.

Rules about which fabrics to wear in which seasons, or what’s appropriate for different occasions—most of these were formalized after the Meiji era. These so-called “rules” should not keep people from enjoying kimono in their own way.

In fact, wearing kimono freely is one of the most powerful ways to preserve it.

It supports the livelihoods of the artisans.

If people feel too intimidated to wear kimono, it will simply vanish from daily life. That’s how close to extinction it already is.

If you love kimono, if you truly want it to survive into the future, then wear it—freely, joyfully, and as often as possible.

And if you love it enough to treat it as art and simply display it, that’s perfectly fine too.

This is what those in the field are asking me to communicate to readers.

Protecting tradition and passing it on to the future does not mean enforcing obscure etiquette.

It means ensuring that the artisans who make kimono can earn a living and continue their craft with peace of mind.

Shouldn’t that be our shared, overarching goal right now?

And if I may add—a small wish: even if you usually enjoy secondhand or vintage kimono, consider purchasing something new once in a while. It’s a direct way to support the artisans.

The conversation about rules can come after that.
