The Museum of the Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shōzōkan, opens in full this autumn. I attended the press conference.
The works of art and craft handed down within the Japanese Imperial Family number some 6,300.
What struck me most is that the Agency for Cultural Affairs only began designating them in 2021. Until then it was held to be presumptuous to subject Imperial possessions to a national ranking. Ten are currently designated National Treasures, six of which are calligraphy. That number will grow.
“Treasures of the Imperial Family: Where Beauty Arises” opens on 3 November 2026, bringing Shōsōin treasures into public view within the palace grounds for the first time. In February 2027, all thirty scrolls of Itō Jakuchū’s Colorful Realm of Living Beings will be shown together for the first time in eleven years.
What we were shown that day was a suite of brand-new galleries, still entirely empty. The treasures will arrive in sequence. I can think of few things I would rather watch fill up.
