I joined Genbei Yamaguchi, the tenth-generation head of Kyoto’s Kondaya Genbei, for two talk sessions at Hankyu Umeda Main Store in Osaka.
The kimono he is wearing is woven from paper, with large characters spelling “Genbei” across the back. Snake, spider and butterfly motifs, along with broken lattice patterns, evoke qualities that warriors once sought to embody, staking their lives on their convictions. In both dress and conversation, Genbei brings elegance to the spirit of kabuku: bold, unconventional self-expression.
He shared many fascinating stories I had never heard before. One particularly astonishing account concerned Giorgio Armani’s visit to his shop: he stayed for five hours, handling one precious obi sash after another, exploring their textures.
My thanks to everyone who joined us, and to the Hankyu team for bringing these conversations to life.
