一生さんの訃報の前に、オリビア・ニュートン＝ジョンの訃報を聞いた。

1980年代の初めに最もよく聞いていたのが、オリビアの「ザナドゥ」だった。一点の曇りなく、希望と明るさと官能に光り輝いているような歌で、時代のムードと完璧にあっていた。今聞いても、あまりの「きれい」さに泣けてくるほど。

ザナドウは当初、ただのバブリーな「場所（ナイトスポット）」として歌われていたかもしれない。でもこの歌詞の抽象度は高い。メロディがきれいであればあるほど、歌詞が魂に響いてくるようなところがある。オリビアの裏声ギリギリの高音の声がそこまで高めていくんですね。

前半は一点の曇りもなく光り輝く愛の世界の祝福。後半は哀しみを隠した天の世界にも感じられてくる。

オリビアはザナドゥにたどりついただろうか。すべての人間はそこに近いところにいることを、あらためて思い出させてくれる。
